My name is Liza Bracey. I am a costume designer for film and television and the founder of Lupo Knitwear. During the writers’ and actors’ strike, I searched for a creative outlet to fill my time and decided to invest in an old knitting machine from eBay. I imagined unpacking it and wearing a beautiful jumper the very same afternoon. Reality, however, was far more complex.

Getting the machine up and running was a challenge, but with the help of countless tutorial videos from YouTube’s @theanswerladyknits, I managed to make it work. Learning to use it proficiently was another journey altogether. I discovered theknittingschool.online, led by the brilliant Helen Sharpe, whose impeccable aesthetic and comprehensive lessons cover every facet of machine knitting.

As I progressed through Helen’s courses, I became utterly captivated by machine knitting. Thanks to my work in costume design, I have unique access to a wide array of knitwear, especially period pieces. My appreciation for knitwear deepened as I immersed myself in understanding and replicating various knitting techniques.

After a year of dedication, I proudly completed my first garment entirely from scratch — from drafting the pattern to finishing the piece. There was no turning back. Machine knitting had become not just a hobby, but a new frontier for creative innovation.
